Kiev
I want to tell you about my city-- Kiev. It is the capital of
the Ukraine. It is historical, commercial, cultural, religious, educational
and industrial center of the country. It is also a large international
center. The population of Kiev is about 2,5 million, and Kiev has
large territory on the both sides of the river Dnepr. Kiev is 1500--1600
years
old.
Kiev-- has been called “the mother of cities
of Russia.” I heard many deferent stories and legends about the founding
of Kiev. The first legend says that many years ago three brothers,
which were called Key, Scheck, Horiey and their sister Lebed arrived to
the place of the present Kiev. They built a small town and
named it Kiev in rememberence of their oldest brother Key. It is
why this city is called Kiev.
Chronicler Nester has written about founding
of Kiev. He wrote that the Apostle Andrew, brother of Peter arrived
and stood on the coast of Dnepr and said to his friends: “ Do you see thes
mountains? On the top of this mountains will be a Great City and
God will raise here many churches.” He got up on the top of the mountain,
blessed them, put the cross, and prayed to the God. In the future
on that place was founded city Kiev that became religious centering of
old Russia.
Old
Kiev has many monuments of history such as “Golden gate” as seen in the
above picture, Kievo-Pecherskay Lavra, Sofievskiy cathedral, Andreyvskay
church, also seen above, and many, many others. It is a great monument
of history and medieval architecture.
Kievo-Pecherskay Lavra is one of
the famous places of the Ukraine and World. All churches of Lavra
inside are decorated with different pictures and illustrations. Many
icons are masterpieces of art. On territory of Lavra archeologists
have found many underground caves and tunnels. It was a place where
monks lived which have built and found men’s monastery. At the present
time, on the territory of Lavra locates active Orthodox men’s monastery.
Kiev is a great place for tourists.
Welcome to our Kiev.
