Hong Kong , a beautiful city, has reverted
to China now. Today, it is known as the Hong Kong Special Administrative
Region of the People’s Repubilc of China. It signifies the beginning of
a new era. I’m fully confident of its future. Even though I’m studying
in the United States, I usually miss two aspects of my city: The
night scenery and The New Year’s greeting.
Hong Kong is a beautiful seaport which attracts tourists from all parts of the world. Although it is very small, the scenery is wonderful. At night, it is covered with so many electric lights that it looks like a Christmas tree. Houses built on the top of the mountain seem like many lonely people standing there waiting and waiting. While you are crossing the harbour at night, your heart will be caught by the beauty of Hong Kong’s night. The lights glimmer all the time. They are white, red, yellow, and green. They glimmer like many kinds of diamonds. If you look in the sea, you will see that the water is as beautiful as the real lights because the lights are also reflected in the water. When you look up at the sky, you will see the bright moon above your head, stars accompanying it. All in all, you may feel that you are living in an unreal world. The other aspect is New Year. Today in Hong Kong, most of us still regard the first day of the first moon as the beginning of a new year. When New Year’s day is approaching, people hurry to buy something new because they believe that new year will bring them new luck . Some people put lucky posters up at home and parents are busily preparing red bag (lucky money) for children.
In the past, the poster “ A Hundred Sons and a Thousand Grandsons” was more popular since people desired to have more sons. But nowadays, too many sons is always a burden in the family. The poster “The Dogs and Horses Will Always Win” has become more and more attractive since many people consider gambling as their only entertainment. As time goes by, everything changes and so do the lucky posters. During New Year’s day, many people go to visit their relatives and friends. When they meet, they say greetings to each other. A common greeting of the Chinese is Kung Hei Fat Choy which means “wishing you to grow prosperous.” This greeting brings children many red bags since every adult would like to become rich. Most probably, the children are the happiest in the New Year for they can receive a lot of red bags. Hong Kong, the pearl of the Orient, is a really special city. |
